IELTS

International English Language Testing System

Introduction

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) measures the language proficiency of people who want to study or work where English is used as a language of communication. It uses a nine-band scale to clearly identify levels of proficiency, from non-user (band score 1) through to expert (band score 9).

IELTS Academic or IELTS General Training

IELTS is available in two test versions: Academic – for people applying for higher education or professional registration, and General Training for those migrating to Australia, Canada and the UK, or applying for secondary education, training programmes and work experience in an English-speaking environment. Both versions provide a valid and accurate assessment of the four language skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking.

Choose Your Training

1 – Study or train at a university or college at undergraduate or postgraduate level

IELTS Academic is designed for people planning to study in higher education or those seeking professional registration. It assesses whether you are ready to begin studying or training in an environment where English is the language used.

2 – Gain registration in a professional organization or join an association

If you’re planning to move overseas to an English speaking country and are seeking professional registration, it is likely that you will be asked to provide evidence of your English language ability. IELTS results are accepted by many professional associations that have set minimum language requirements. Most of these associations request an IELTS Academic result, but it is a good idea to contact the organization to confirm.

3 – Study or train in secondary education or training program.

IELTS General Training measures English language proficiency in a practical, everyday context. It is appropriate for those planning to study in high school or a vocational training program.

4 – Visa requirements for migration to an English speaking country

People migrating to Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK must take the IELTS General Training test.
